Homegrown

Not everything tastes better homegrown or homemade, but having grown up with huge orange and grapefruit trees in my backyard, it absolutely pains me to buy citrus from the store. They just aren't even close to as good. But my parents moved a few years back and I've had to break down and buy some grapefruit and oranges every once in a while.

But not anymore!!!

After just three years our very own tree is producing nicely--30 whole grapefruit! And we have enjoyed every bite. I think my children are every bit as much in love with them as me. They get pretty excited whenever it's their turn to go out and pick the grapefruit. And they're working on learning how to wait patiently until it's time to eat them. Though it's pretty cute to hear Ty asking if it's "time to eat the grapefruit?" over and over and over....

If only our pitiful orange tree would produce now. It's amazing how trees planted just twenty or so feet apart, and given the same care, can grow so differently.

That's awesome! I love grapefruit so much and am like you...it kills me to pay for it. I know I went about 5 years without eating one cause I was in FL/NC and wouldn't pay. But I craved them like I've never craved anything before being pregnant with Sally and have bought them now. There are some gross store-bought ones in my fridge right now and I'm pretty jealous of yours! But happy for you :)

Beautiful fruit! Our orange tree is pretty scrawny too.

We miss our citrus trees, too! I love the picture of the grapefruit tree, mostly because of the handsome grapefruit models. ;-)

I'm so glad you are enjoying your fruit tree(s). We planted two in our backyard in Apache Junction the year before we left. I hope the new owners are enjoying them! We put in a peach tree and two apple trees in our yard here in Alabama. The peaches were wonderful, but we're still waiting for the apples. :-)

That is great! I also had a mini orchard at my parents house. They have everything from lemons to blood oranges. I am missing it this winter! :-)

Yum... so jealous!! My parents had a grapefruit tree too, but after 28 years, it died last year! It was such a bummer!! What is funny is they had an orange tree too and it never produced very good or very much fruit! Hopefully you have better luck with yours!
